Xiaomi 15 Ultra Review: Megapixel Marvel – Tech Advisor Long-Term Reality Check: 30 Days Later

androfyi calendar_today October 3, 2026 schedule 6 min read visibility 2 views

I walked into this review ready to crown the Xiaomi 15 Ultra as the undisputed camera champion of 2025. After thirty days of daily use, my verdict is more complicated. The hardware is genuinely extraordinary, but the software pipeline and a few baffling design choices keep it from true perfection. This is a phone that will make photographers weep with joy and make everyone else wonder why their hand hurts.

Ergonomics & How It Actually Feels

Xiaomi 15 Ultra Review: Megapixel Marvel – Tech Advisor real world overview

Let’s address the elephant in the room immediately. At 226 grams and 9.4mm thick, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is a chunky handset. The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is 1.5mm thinner, and you will notice that difference within the first hour. The camera bump consumes nearly the entire upper third of the rear panel, which means the phone rocks dramatically on any flat surface and makes portrait-orientation gaming an exercise in finger contortion.

That said, the craftsmanship is exceptional. The Leica Silver Black and Leica Green Silver finishes are stunning, and the rounded edges make it far more comfortable to hold than the boxy Galaxy S25 Ultra. If you want a phone that looks magnificent without a case, this is it. Just know that you will be paying for that beauty with a perpetually precarious nightstand situation.

Living With It: The Display Truth: Brightness & Refresh

The 6.73-inch LTPO AMOLED panel running at 3,200×1,440 pixels with a 1–120Hz adaptive refresh rate is superb. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support make this screen perfect for media consumption, and the 522ppi pixel density keeps everything razor-sharp. I used this phone for hours of video streaming and gaming without eye strain, and outdoor visibility was never an issue even under direct sunlight.

Audio quality pairs beautifully with that display. The combination makes the 15 Ultra a superb choice for watching films, gaming, and listening to music. Hi-Res audio support is a welcome addition that audiophiles will appreciate.

Under Load: Real-World Snappiness Test

The Snapdragon 8 Elite processor paired with 16GB of RAM delivers ultra-smooth performance. Day-to-day tasks are handled without breaking a sweat, and everything feels silky smooth and lightning fast. The 3D Dual-Channel IceLoop cooling system does a commendable job of stopping the phone from getting too hot during demanding tasks, though extended gaming sessions will still warm up that massive camera bump.

The RAM extension feature adds a theoretical additional 6GB, which was enabled by default on my sample. In practice, I never felt constrained by memory management. Multitasking is effortless, and photo editing in Lightroom is genuinely pleasant on this display.

The Friction Points

What Impresses

  • Camera Hardware: The quad-lens Leica-tuned system is the star here. A 50-megapixel 1-inch main sensor with f/1.63 aperture, a 50-megapixel floating telephoto at 3X optical zoom, a 50-megapixel ultrawide, and the headline 200-megapixel periscope telephoto at 4.3X optical zoom with up to 120X digital zoom. The focal length range spans 14 to 200mm, which is extraordinary.
  • Photography Kit Legend Edition: At £179, this optional accessory transforms the phone into something resembling a DSLR. The camera grip adds a spring-loaded zoom rocker, two-stage shutter button, customizable wheel, and video record button. It plugs into the USB-C port and adds a 2000mAh battery top-up. A detachable thumb grip and optional shutter button add-ons are included this year. It genuinely changes how you shoot.
  • Battery Life: Easily lasts a full day of heavy use. The Chinese version’s 6,000mAh battery is particularly impressive for power users. The global version’s 5,410mAh cell is still solid, and 90W wired plus 50W wireless charging remains speedy.
  • Front Camera: The 32-megapixel OmniVision OV32B sensor with f/2.0 aperture and 90° field of view captures detailed selfies with automatic crop adjustment for group shots. 4K video at 60fps is now supported, finally matching competitors.
  • Video Capability: 8K recording at 30fps is available, and test footage was incredibly smooth, detailed, and colorful across various settings.
  • Connectivity Extras: An IR blaster, the latest wireless standards, and Hi-Res audio support add genuine value that most rivals have abandoned.
  • Quick Ball: This customizable floating shortcut tool offers access to five apps or shortcuts from anywhere on screen, boosting productivity in a way that feels genuinely useful rather than gimmicky.

What Frustrates

  • Variable Aperture Vanished: The 14 Ultra featured stepless variable aperture. The 15 Ultra drops it entirely. Xiaomi claims software optimization and algorithm upgrades achieve comparable exposure effects, but tinkerers lose meaningful control over exposure. Another variable aperture experiment that turned out to be short-lived.
  • Optical Zoom Step Back: Native optical zoom drops from 5X to 4.3X. The 200-megapixel sensor compensates with better digital zoom quality and a larger image to crop from, but purists will notice the regression.
  • Camera Processing Pipeline: Sharpness results are impressive, but aggressive tonal compression and vivid color tuning push skin tones away from reality in auto mode. Dynamic range is the weakest of any rear lens, with aggressive highlight clipping that limits usefulness in high-contrast scenes.
  • Video Stabilization: The worst on the phone. The long focal length amplifies any shake, and electronic correction does not adequately compensate. Footage at extreme zoom levels requires a tripod or very steady hands.
  • Camera App UX: Extra features now require swiping toward the middle from either side of the shutter button. A pop-up message explains this on first launch, but if you ignore it like I did, you will wonder where the “More” features went. You can switch back to the old layout in settings, but the default experience is needlessly confusing.
  • Photography Kit Limitations: The zoom control on my sample was wobbly, an issue I did not encounter on the previous version. The kit only comes in a red accent color with no alternative. You cannot charge the camera grip and the phone simultaneously.
  • Software Skin: Xiaomi’s Android implementation remains a mixed bag. AI features feel inconsistent, and the overall experience lacks the polish of Google or Samsung’s offerings.
  • Size and Weight: At 9.4mm thick and 226 grams, this is a heavy, thick phone. Extended one-handed use will fatigue your wrist.

Critical Context

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is not officially available in the United States. Importing one means dealing with potential network band limitations, no official warranty, and the hassle of sourcing the Photography Kit separately. For those in regions where it is officially sold at €1,499, the value proposition is stronger but still requires accepting Xiaomi’s software ecosystem and the phone’s considerable physical footprint.

After thirty days, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra remains the most capable camera phone I have used. The 200-megapixel periscope telephoto produces results that genuinely surprise me, and the Photography Kit Legend Edition is the secret weapon that no rival can match. But the loss of variable aperture, the processing pipeline that prioritizes punch over accuracy, and the chunky ergonomics make this a harder universal recommendation than the specs suggest. For photographers who want the absolute best mobile imaging hardware and are willing to work around the software quirks, this is your phone. For everyone else, the regular Xiaomi 15 offers 80% of the experience in a more manageable package.
