Xiaomi 17 Ultra Review: The Camera Champion Long-Term Reality Check: 30 Days Later

androfyi calendar_today June 26, 2026 schedule 4 min read visibility 7 views

I spent 30 days with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, and the corporate PR slides don’t tell the whole story. Out of the box, the camera hardware feels like a genuine leap forward. After a month of daily use, the sheen has worn off just enough to reveal the friction points that spec sheets conveniently hide. This is a camera champion, yes, but one with a few critical compromises that daily use makes impossible to ignore.

Ergonomics & Design Language Broken Down

Xiaomi wants you to know this is a premium device, and the attention to detail shows. The flat-edged build fits right in with the current flagship crowd, but the oversized camera module is the immediate giveaway. It looks and feels seriously high-end. However, that flat glass back is incredibly slippery. I found myself gripping it far tighter than my daily driver, constantly paranoid about a drop. It is the thinnest Xiaomi Ultra model to date, but the sheer size of the camera island means it still wobbles noticeably on a flat table.

Xiaomi 17 Ultra Review: The Camera Champion real world overview

Living With It: The Display Truth: Brightness & Refresh

The 6.9-inch AMOLED panel is a beast. With a 2,608 x 1,200 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and 3,500-nit peak brightness, it is easily bright enough for direct sunlight. More importantly, it sustains that brightness over long periods, a feat some competitors still cannot claim. It is vibrant, detailed, and leaves nothing wanting on paper. My only gripe? It lacks the new Privacy Display tech found on the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. If you are handing your phone to someone to show a photo, they see exactly what you see. It is a glaring omission at this price point.

Under Load: Thermal Throttling & Real Speed

Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra has the uneasy task of maintaining high performance under heavy workloads. Our stress tests reveal a minor win: the CPU throttles down to around 60% but maintains fairly stable clock speeds 10 minutes into a heavy load. Many handsets bounce between high and low clock speeds, causing wild frame rate variations during gaming. The 17 Ultra tends to hold lower clock speeds steadily, resulting in a much smoother, predictable gaming experience. It handles heavy titles like a champ without the jarring stutters.

The Friction Points

The Good

  • Main Sensor: The new 1-inch OmniVision OV50X with LOFIC tech delivers best-in-class dynamic range without needing multiple frames. It is immediately noticeable.
  • Telephoto Lens: The unique continuous optical zoom is a rare mechanical trick that prioritizes real-world results over spec sheet flexing.
  • Battery Life: Two-day battery life is a reality, and the super-fast universal charging tops you up in minutes.
  • Build Quality: Excellent ingress protection, fast and accurate fingerprint scanner, and great speakers round out a true flagship.

The Bad

  • Focusing Distance: The 30cm minimum focusing distance on the telephoto kills macro capabilities. The standard Xiaomi 17 focuses at 10cm; this is a massive step backward.
  • Ultrawide Camera: The weakest link. The smaller sensor results in softer, darker images, particularly in low light.
  • Post-Processing Artifacts: Heavy denoising and sharpening leave fine details looking mottled and ill-defined, especially at 2x, 8.6x, and 17.2x zoom.
  • HyperOS Bloat: Questionable AI features and software oddities drag down the user experience.

Configuration Warnings

  • Video Frame Rates: The lack of 24p and PAL 25p frame rates is an odd choice for an international launch, leaving huge swaths of the world without a flicker-free solution.
  • Heart Rate Sensor: Moving the heart rate measurement to the LED flash and camera sensor makes it incredibly finicky to use. You have to awkwardly stretch your finger over both.
  • Missing Charger: No charger in the box, despite the premium €1,499.00 MSRP.
